Creative Sparks

Posted by Dana Lynn Thompson

I've been reading this book called "Creative Sparks" by Jim Krause. I thought the following passage from the book was really inspiring.

"A drummer practicing LOUD & HARD. Everything can be heard from outside the garage. Every success and every failure. Drummer misses a phrase and then repeats it in short bursts until it works. I wonder, do the neighbors mind listening to these sessions? Probably. Does the drummer mind that the neighbors listen (especially when the drummer messes up?) NO! This drummer has ability and couldn't possibly give a damn about what any listener thinks about his drumming in the middle of a weekday practice session.

If the drummer did care, they would never have gotten any good to begin with. As (scrapbook artists, web designers, musicians, writers) why should WE care so dearly about what people think about our art? What does it matter if we create something that sucks every once in a while? How much time have we already lost worrying about it?"

This really hit home for me. The reason why I scrapbook is as an artistic outlet, to continue flexing my creative muscle and to document this wonderful life that Scott and I have. Sometimes I do worry I'll create something that sucks. I need to be more free with my creativity. Maybe this will give me the courage to write that novel I've always wanted to write but was too scared to start for fear it sucked. Hope this inspires someone else too.
