After giving the horses their grain tonight, I walked around our pasture and breathed in the fresh air. I heard the crunch of fallen leaves under my feet. I found a horseshoe.
Then I did something I haven't done in a long time. I can't remember the last time it is so far in the past. I laid down in the middle of the field, crossed my hands behind my head, stared up at the sky and watched the clouds float by. I imagined what their shapes could be....a heart, a face, the mountains. I heard the whoosh of a bird's wings as he flew by low. I watched the clouds change from white, to bright orange, to soft pink as the sun set.
I sat up to see our sweet dog Rocky running toward me, tongue lolling and ears flying, back from a romp in the neighbor's woods. I got up to meet him, my rusty horseshoe treasure in hand, and slowly walked back to the barn, enjoying the warm weather after a week of bitter cold and rain. The horses were done eating grain and after putting on his halter, I gave Bolshoi a hug, buried my cheek in his soft hair and breathed in the wonderfully comforting and familiar smell of horse. Just like I used to do 20 years ago when we first came to be friends. So long ago. A ritual that should be practiced every day, never missed.
Then, just before going inside, on my way back up from the mailbox, I noticed that the first daffodils are blooming in our front yard. I go to have closer look...not open all the way yet, but holding back some splendor for show in a few days time. This perfect evening made me realize how often we overlook the small things that bring us the most joy as we whiz by in our hurried lives. This week, stop, look around and note the little things. Really see them and relish them for the gifts they are. These moments are truly what makes life wonderful. I wish you the little things.
