On Friday night Scott played out at Harvest Moon in downtown Rome. I came home and went to bed about 1:30 and Scott got home at around 2am. At approximately 2:30am, Rocky and Waggles, who were both inside, started going nuts and we heard a commotion outside. Scott got up to investigate. He came back in the bedroom and said, "You need to get up and help me. There are two horses out and they are not ours." At this point he'd only been in bed for about 15 minutes.
I get outside and see a paint and a strawberry roan standing in the corner of our fenceline by our water trough trying to get at our horses over the fence and squealing at each other. We recognized them as the two horses from the cow pasture down the road. Scott came down from the barn with halters and we tried unsuccessfully to catch them for several minutes while they ran all over our backyard. We realized both were stallions, hence all the grunting and striking out with their front feet around our horses, so we had to be extremely careful. We had no idea how much handling these horses were used to.
I called 911 because I knew they had a list of horse owners in the area and told them who I thought they belonged to. She said she would try and get a hold of someone.
Scott managed to go up and bring our horses into the barn. The last thing we wanted was one of them getting hurt on the fence or being attacked. While he was doing this, the roan struck out at the other horse and got his front leg caught up on the third wire of our fence at his knee and couldn't get it off. Thank goodness he didn't freak out and Scott was able to come down, stretch the wire down and lift his leg off with no damage to the horse or our fence. They had already broken one strand of wire.
Shortly after this, they took off down our driveway, trotted down the road and came up the driveway of the empty lot on the other side of our barn. Scott somehow got a halter on the paint horse over the fence and was standing there holding him.
A police officer showed up and went down the road to knock on doors and try to find the owners to come and get the horses. Scott is still standing there holding the other horse and the roan is sticking with his buddy although he won't let me catch him. All this time we have no idea if the owners have been notified and we start wondering what we will do if nobody comes to get them.
Just as we were discussing trying to lead the paint horse down the road to the pasture and just hope the other would follow, the owner showed up with two people to help him bring the horses back down the road. Thank goodness!! They couldn't catch the roan either and used our original idea of walking one horse and letting the other follow. It took all three of them to herd them down the road because the one that was loose kept wanting to come back to our place!
We finally got back in bed at 4am and asleep around 4:30. Scott had to get up at 6:30 to go to work. Needless to say, he has been one tired guy this weekend!
