Through with Step 2 of "How to Become an American"

Posted by Dana Lynn Thompson

Step 1: Send in your application and pay your money.

Step 2: Part A
Show up at designated time to be fingerprinted. Be prepared for only a few days notice...we can notify you on Saturday that your appointment for fingerprinting is on Wednesday in downtown Atlanta. We know that none of you work and everyone lives downtown, so this shouldn't be a problem. Be aware that rescheduling your appointment CAN and WILL push back your application time which is already so long that some you may even forget you applied in the first place.

Step 2: Part B
Show up at the designated office at 12 noon sharp so you can stand in line outside to get in. Then when we let you in, be prepared to stand in line again where we will promptly ask you to go back out to your car to leave your cell phone.

Step 2: Part C
Fill out the form handed to you by the security guard after you've shown your appointment notice and ID at least 25 times. Important: If you speak AND read english, you could possibly jump several places ahead in line here as the others try and decipher the form.

Step 2: Part D
Stand in line again to hand your form to the receptionist who will AGAIN check your appointment form and ID in case there was a mistake made the first 25 times it was checked and get your number. Go and sit in the waiting area for at least an hour and a half before your number is called.

Step 2: Part E
When your number is called, go to the waiting clerk who will scan your fingerprints. Be prepared for your thumbs and pinky fingers on both hands to NOT scan in correctly and have the clerk become perturbed with you for being so unpracticed at the art of fingerprint scanning. Be aware there may be many impatient sighs and groans coming from your clerk. Try to relax your little pinky which is stretched out as far as it will go to reach the scanner.

Step 2: Part F
Try not to notice that your clerk has either a) given up or b) maybe got your prints FINALLY and make sure the supervisor checks off on your prints. Fill out the customer satisfaction form while trying not to laugh at the irony of the fact that there actually IS a satisfaction form and leave the building promptly.

Stay tuned for Step 3!!
